A little teaser – it is not as short as all those ads would have you believe!
You may have heard about the post workout “window of opportunity” theory, and how vital this meal timing is to muscle growth. It goes a little something like this…
The Post Workout Window
Post Workout Window Theory
It was once considered crucial to consume a certain ratio of protein and carbs the moment your workout ended. The post workout window theory has struck fear into the hearts of many. The thought was that you have just minutes to consume a post workout meal before the optimum window for muscle growth closed. The gains you had made during the workout would be completely lost!
Our Protein Needs
Consuming protein after an intense workout is crucial for growing muscle. However, there is no short “post workout window of opportunity” that we need to stress over. Plenty of studies have proven this.
As long as you are consuming your daily macronutrient and calories needs to fit your goal, and eating consistent meals you will have a constant supply of protein (amino acids) to cover any post workout protein synthesis (muscle growth), energy and depleted glycogen requirements.
When it comes to protein there are a lot of choices out there. A healthy meal with a hearty serving of protein (eggs or chicken to name a few) is always the best option. Protein powders are an excellent alternative when you are pressed for time or are on the go after a session at the gym. Sometimes they are simply preferable due to the convenience.
Protein Powder Options
I typically use plant based protein powders since I feel they are a better alternative to many of the whey proteins that are out there. When I began to look more closely at food sourcing I found that a lot of the protein powders I was buying were not very good choices. I switched to plant-based because they typically boast an overall cleaner ingredient list. However, I have had it on my radar to try and find a Grass-fed whey too. Grass-fed dairy has the leg up over traditional cow’s milk since their diet is much closer to what it would be in nature.
Unico & Apollo Protein
I was intrigued when Unico reached out to me about sampling their Apollo protein powder. It appeared to fit the bill of what I was looking for so I decided to go for it give it a whirl! The protein is delicious and serves up a very generous amount of protein (34 g) per scoop.
Even though Grass-Fed products have become more common it is ironic that protein powder has only started to offer this option more recently. My current favorite go-to smoothie is a scoop of Apollo blended with half a banana and coconut water. It is so refreshing after a tough workout.
If you are interested in trying out Apollo Protein for yourself there is a $5 off coupon code for readers of The Bikini Exeriment! The code is ‘BIKINI5’ and the link is below.
