I simply heart coffee. Is there anyone out there not in this love affair with me? I have loved coffee since I was a teenager. It is not for the caffeine alone. For a long time I simply drank decaf. While the passion was not as intense I still savored the taste. I have had a lot of questions from readers lately about my butter coffee consumption so I thought it would make a fun post.
Reader Request: Butter Coffee
Butter Coffee slowly became a thing via the Bulletproof Executive a few years back. Scott discovered it and embraced it immediately. I was a little slower to hop on the band wagon. This was still back in the day where I was more of a calorie counter and very wary of consuming fat. All that butter would surely make me fat! Food quality was still not part of my language. I thought any butter was butter. That was practical right? However, Kerrygold and grass-fed butter is very different from your average whipped butter at the food store.
What do I like about butter coffee? I have come to develop a real fondness for the taste. Most of the time I drink my coffee black so the Kerrygold butter and MCT oil give it a really nice, creamy flavor. I personally like 1 tablespoon of the butter and a teaspoon of the MCT. I find that it gives me just enough butter flavor and texture without feeling too greasy. When I was sort of playing around with finding the perfect coffee cocktail I would use too much butter and it was way too heavy. This minor add keeps it fairly light. I like a cup when I get up in the morning to start the day or as a “snack” of sorts in the afternoon. If I do not feel like eating immediately when I wake up I feel it can take the edge off my hunger for a little while.
This coffee cocktail comes with many benefits from combining all of these elements. The coffee itself contains caffeine which has many cognitive benefits to help you think and perform better. There is heightened alertness and energy. It also has physiological benefits for exercise. Coffee contains cafestrol and kahweol which are often overlooked, but very potent brain stimulants. Besides the compounds for energy coffee also contains a variety of antioxidants and has been proven to be a quality food when it comes from a good source. By adding fats, these stimulants operate on a “slow drip” into the brain so it is not all crossing the blood brain barrier at once. It leads to a longer and more sustained release so it controls that spike that often leads to a crash. There is a more consistent release of energy and improved focus.
Why Butter & MCT?
Butter contains short chain and MCT (medium length fats) when absorbed by the body go directly into the blood stream and are readily converted to ketones for use by the brain. Besides glucose, ketones are the only other source of energy that can be used for energy by brain cells. More sources of fuel mean more brain power.
The benefit of getting energy to your brain without sugar is that you are powering the brain without insulin being in the blood stream and causing fluctuations in blood sugar. This can affect your energy greatly.
The MCT oil and the grass-fed butter also contain anti-inflammatory properties. Much of “brain fog” or slowness has been attributed to brain inflammation.
Your Perfect Cocktail
My perfect cocktail is simply the MCT oil with Kerrygold Butter. Scott likes to amp his up quite a bit and adds collagen powder and an egg yolk. The egg yolk acts as an emulsifier and contains choline which is a key component of certain neurotransmitters. An emulsifier helps to blend water and fat into a more consistent liquid and keeps the fat from separating.
Scott has assured me that it is safe to have the raw egg yolks if you wash the outside of the eggs. He does it all the time and is fine. It freaks me out though. After growing up in an era of the threats of salmonella. I just cannot bring myself to do it. Maybe someday I will be adventurous! The collagen and egg yolks do offer additional health benefits, and it amakes it a more substantial drink.
Three Ways to Blend
You can mix up the drink with a Nutribullet, an aeromate (the pic below) or an immersion blender The Bulletproof Executive recommends a Vitamix, but they are very costly.
