Since I have recently starting my new job as a personal trainer I have had fitness, goals and workouts on my mind frequently. As someone who works out regularly I have always considered that part of my daily schedule. Now I am in a gym environment wearing sneakers and tights every day. I am also talking regularly to clients and gym members about the reason they decided to show up to the gym in the first place.
I will admit there are days where I really do not want to workout. Once in a while I have a good reason, and others are when it is cold outside or I do not want to have to change my clothes. Not valid excuses! There are also times when I become a less than enchanted with my routine, and need to mix it up. In other words, I am bored. Those minor issues aside, it is has been a long time since I considered the process of finding your fitspiration.
Finding Your Fitspiration
I have heard a flurry of statistics recently about the “January Joiners” at the gym. Believe it or not they have already trickled off, and it is not even the end of the month. Apparently the life cycle is about two weeks. People join because they are so excited about their resolutions and the promise of a new lifestyle. However, they typically lose their way within a matter of days. Often times, people are enthusiastic about the idea of personal training, but the cost makes it hard for them to commit. I completely understand where they are coming from as the price is substantial for one on one coaching. However, I really do hope that they manage to find their way somehow, and find the dedication that leads to opening the doors of change.
I would like to give my mom a little shout out here, and share that she bought a stationary bike recently and reported to me that she uses it every day. I often joke with her that she is one of my worst clients! She knows it all, but is not always practicing. Years ago, she bought Ezekiel Bread when you had to hunt it down at strange little health shops run by people wearing hemp. So I feel like her influence growing up had a huge effect on me. I really wanted Hostess Cupcakes like the other kids, but she knew what was good for me. My mom was athletic all her life and survived breast cancer as well as a severe hip and back injury. Through all those set backs she still has her fitspiration and is motivated to move every day.
I am probably the last person you could have predicted would become a personal trainer. I was never active, did not like sports, and as I grew up I became a sporadic gym member when the mood hit me. I lived the “January Joiner” lifestyle, and was always a gym casualty. I was lost and did not even know how to use the elliptical. No joke! I had to stick to the treadmill because the buttons made sense.
It was fortunate that I met Scott and he turned out to be an amazing coach and wealth of training knowledge. However, he has certainly dated other girls who had no interest in learning about training. While Scott is a great resource for me you can truly only look for support from those around you. In other words, he gave me the tools, but he is not my sole source of inspiration.
No one, thing or event can get your booty off the couch. YOU have to want to do it. Is that not true of everything in life? Like the saying goes….there is no elevator to success. You have to take the stairs. There are no short cuts, handouts or easy fixes.
As someone who did not grow up athletic or loving to sweat what finally helped me turn the corner was knowledge and results. As I learned more about training, I began to learn more about myself. I loved the confidence and strength that came through becoming physically stronger and moving better. Feeling good motivates me every day. I want to be better than the day before. Finding your fitspiration is what gets you through the tough times. It comes 100% from within. I have been knocked down my fair share of times, and always fight to find my way back up again. Being strong makes you tough mentally and physically. I am grateful to have discovered a way of life that brought me so many positive changes. I only hope to pass some on some of that feeling to the people that are put on my path. Hopefully in some small way I can contribute to them finding their own fitspiration.
