Hey there! How is your Tuesday shaping up so far? A Body Pump Class Review is coming your way today. Pump what? Please allow me to explain. A few years ago I stumbled upon the world of healthy living blogs. This is where I first starting hearing about Body Pump classes. Unfortunately, none of the gyms where I have belonged offered Body Pump designed by Les Mills so I was unable to give it a try. I remained curious because the people I saw talking about their experience with the class absolutely loved it. In fact, on Instagram they choose to refer to themselves as the Les Mills Tribe. The followers of this workout movement are extremely loyal.
Body Pump Class Review
The gym where I work offers quite a few Les Mills classes. Last week I decided to make it a to-do to check out some of their class offerings. I want to be in the position where I know enough about the group fitness schedule to make recommendations to my clients. They will need ways to supplement their training in-between our one on one sessions. Plus, when you are in a new environment it is just good to get to know people by putting yourself out there. Since I have been intrigued by Body Pump for quite a while I decided it would be the first one I would add to my calendar.
Tips for New Classes
I recommend to any new class a little early. It is really important to have an opportunity to introduce yourself to the instructor and ask questions about the set up. It can be very hard to do this a few minutes before the class starts. Plus, it is not really fair for the rest of class since they have schedule the class into their day. This is not quite as important after time goes on and you become more familiar. However, if you have a favorite spot and such being prompt or a bit early is always a good thing. Equipment Set Up
From reading about the classes I had a reasonable idea of what to expect and started to put together an area for myself with the necessary equipment.I grabbed a Les Mill step with some extra steps to modify the height. I had no idea what we would be doing with the box so I wanted to have options.
I also grabbed a bar, an array of small weighted plates and clips. A mat from the pile in the studio, and I was done! I was ready to meet Mr. Mills and whatever moves he had coming my way.
What to Expect
The class is a solid 60 minutes of choreographed movements completed to music. Each section gets its own song. The choreography is updated and provided to the instructor every three months. This explains use of the term release. My instructor explained she was using mostly the current one with half of a much older release thrown into the mix. She explained to me that many of the class participants attend a class several times a week. It is no joke that Body Pump is popular! Therefore the same release can become repetitive for them very quickly. Her solution is to add in some of the old releases for variety.
Key Areas Targeted
The trend as of late has been more a push towards functional movement and individual work with the plates. There has been less use of the barbell to make room for these adjustments.
Body Pump Class Review
What surprised me most about the class was that it emphasized upper body exercises way more than I expected. There was some squat and lower body work, but it was less signifigant overall. This could be the release of this current class so I am not sure if this is always the case.
I had a lot of fun attending my first class and after I was done I contemplated where it could fit into my personal fitness. My lower body is very strong from the weight lifting workouts that I do every week. However, due to my pesky shoulder injury my upper body has been weakened quite a bit. I plan to attend more Body Pump classes because I think it could serve to well to have some dedicated time to work on my upper body development. Plus, I think the fast pace lends itself to overall strength and conditioning improvement. A little fun at “pump” never hurt anyone!
Apparently the class instructor is mixing in some new moves week so I will get to see what that is all about soon! If you have an opportunity to give Body Pump a try I hope this review serves as a helpful guide.
