Good morning! Hope you had a lovely week and are excited to jump into the weekend. I feel like I am trapped in the Wizard of Oz at the moment as Texas is experiencing some seriously strange weather. We are anticipating rain every day so I am guessing most of my weekend will be spent indoors. The torrential downpours did not make for fun driving when I went to yoga class last night.
A little anecdote in the Instagram story vs. the real life scenario. Rain was on the forecast all day yesterday. It was super humid, but the rain appeared to be holding off. I had a doctor’s appointment and had to run a few errands in the afternoon so I was running a little behind. I had allowed myself lots of extra time though since I would be driving during rush hour. Scott was making a quick stop at home so he snapped a few photos of me before he headed out the door. I look calm, and I posted on Instagram that I was off to my happy place – yoga. Well, it was all 100% accurate.
I then headed out and was hit was the slowest traffic I had even seen. Despite the extra time I had allotted class had already started by the time I pulled into the parking lot. I started doing the mental calculation of how long it would take me to go in, take off my shoes, walk into class, etc. There was a 7:00 class, but I really did not want to kill so much time and then get home the late. I rushed in sans umbrella while still debating what I should do. I decided if the class was not too crowded I would slip in. I peeked inside the class, and it was only half full. Perfect! I found a spot relatively close to the door so I would not disturb anyone. I picked up the pose the class was engaged in and took a deep breath. Hardly a moment later, my phone decided to emanate one of those loud emergency alarms as an alert that there was a flash flood warning in the area. Just awesome. When running late one often become distracted and forget to silence their phone. So much for my Namaste.
It was simply a little reflection after I got home last night, and was thinking about my day. I know I am guilty of comparing myself to others in social media. A simple picture will send me down the path of thinking their life is perfect. Their plans go off without a hitch, and they have it all together. However, we tend to forget that Instagram and Facebook do not always share the entire story. It is simply a moment in time, a picture, and you can make of it what you will.
Today is Friday and I am excited to share some things with you that have truly been highlights of my week…
Build Your Blog – Long before I started my own blog, I started reading as many as possible for a host of different reasons. It was great to discover an online community of real people sharing their interests. I loved seeing that people discussed a love of organic foods, new recipes and working out. Gina’s blog, The Fitnessista, quickly became one of my favorite daily reads. Gina has a spunky writing style that makes you feel like you are reading a note from a friend. She is also honest and thoughtful about all things health related. It is fun to read her posts, and she offers a lot of great information since she is a raw foods chef, personal trainer and group exercise instructor. She just released an e-book, Build Your Blog, which I finished reading last night.
It was a quick read and full of information. The primary audience was bloggers who have started a blog, but want to take it to the next level. It was helpful, engaging and provided me with good steps to investigate. I find that so much information online can be convoluted, and this tool was practical with clear cut advice. The book is only $9 right now, and it was totally worth purchasing. Thanks Gina!
Spry Chewing Gum – I used to chew quite a bit of gum. I always had it on hand and it was sort of my go-to solution throughout the day if I was a little hungry or I had just finished a meal or a snack at work. Even though I had cut out artificial sweetner from my diet a while ago, I still hung onto the gum. Some things are harder to give up then others! When I was browsing at Whole Foods I came upon Spry. I bought a pack to try it out and I really like it. The ingredients are all natural and there are three flavors available: cinnamon, peppermint and spearmint.
It uses xylitol as a sweetner. It also comes close to the same cost as regular chewing gum at $1.29 a pack. This is what I keep in my purse these days.
Nordstrom Packages – I love receiving packages in the mail. I know I am not the only one since I recently read on Heather’s blog where she confessed the same feeling of joy when getting a delivery. I even get a little excited when my supplements come from Amazon. No joke. So I was really excited to receive a package from Nordstrom the other day with some new workout clothes that my mom had sent me as a “just because” present. She remembered I had mentioned recently that every pair of workout leggings I have are black, and that I need some color in my fitness wardrobe. Now that I am older my mom usually shies away from picking out clothes for me, but this was really sweet and thoughtful. Everything she sent was just perfect!
Legally Blonde Quotes – If you have read a few of my posts you will see that I am a huge quote collector. They range from old movies, literature, music and TV. Well, I am on day 19 of the happiness challenge so I have been thinking about quotes that are about happiness. Since I do my fair share of working out I was digging deep to remember any fun musings on exercise. Then it hit me – Legally Blonde! This is actually one of my favorite movies because it is fun and instantly puts me in a good mood. It is a little silly, but it has a great message about female empowerment. Reese Witherspoon at her best. I shared a quote and along with a pic from our gym on Instagram last Friday. “Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don’t shoot their husbands, they just don’t.”
While checking to see if I had the quote right I stumbled upon a whole site dedicated to quotes from the movie. Score! As if it is hard.
Check them out here for a few laughs.
Bloglovin – I had totally forgotten that I signed my blog up for Bloglovin at some point awhile back. However, I never really took advantage of the service. The blogs I read saved as favorites and would simply check their sites at some point during the day. However, some bloggers are on a very regimented posting schedule, and others are not. So I would skip the site or go back later if they were not updated. Bloglovin is an awesome tool where you can choose what you want to follow for updates, and it aggregates all of the saved information in your account so new posts appear in a feed. Why did it take me so long to discover this? It is a huge time saver and I can simply go to the service rather than scrolling through my favorites. You sign up for a free account and start following any kind of blog you like and can even save them if you want to go back to the information or a recipe. I think it is really cool.

I am almost done with my first coffee for the day so I am off to squeeze in a light breakfast before working out. May you have a great weekend that hopefully lives up to your Instagram expectations. 🙂
See you on Monday!
