“Magic is just science that we don’t understand yet – Arthur C. Clarke”….Natalie Portman, Thor
Happy Friday! I’m really looking forward to a relaxing weekend and hope to catch Divergent at some point since it comes out on Friday. I did not read the book, but after getting lured into the fan mania of The Hunger Games series I think Divergent could be a winner as well. ow on to a few new things that are making me smile this week….a few were found on my last expedition to Whole Foods.
3/21: Friday’s Favorite Things
Fearless Chocolate – I absolutely love chocolate and probably eat a few pieces every day. In fact, I just had some as a little after lunch dessert. As with many of the finer things in life like wine, coffee or tea there is a real thought process behind finding just the right chocolate bar. To be perfectly honest, I never understood what those different percentages meant. As I have come to understand food labels a bit better I now know that the percentage relates to the amount of cacao. I typically buy 70% Lindt Chocolate Bars or 72% Organic Chocolate from Trader Joe’s. This week I picked up Fearless which is 75% Midnight. The taste was very enjoyable and it was very similar to the 70% with a huge drop in the amount of sugar. I definitely recommend trying it out if you’re a chocolate lover like me.
Kombucha Drinks – I have grown to be quite fond of Kombucha. I know a lot of people are turned off by the evervescent vinegar stuff with the rather creepy reference “to the mother” but I dig it. I usually drink a half a day typically with my lunch. There is no science to support that this is a beneficial time to do this, but I guess I like a beverage with flavor mid-day. I normally only buy the Synergy Brand, but I was quite delighted to see more variety to pick from at the Whole Foods in Austin. Some top pics were Kosmic Kombucha in Salty Dog and Purple Haze as well as Budda’s Brew in Hop’d.
Homemade Iced Tea – On the flip side, I know that lots of specialty drinks and extras can add up to a big expense when food shopping. I was working on a guest post for Loving on the Run this week and one of my top tips for a grocery store food budget was to stick to the basics like water and homemade iced tea to try to cut down on the extras. A few tea bags brewed this enormous container of tea and it should last quite a few days. It’s a nice change of pace and very economical. My mother and grandmother always made iced team this way and of course I was jealous of the other kids who were downing the iced tea mixes that were full of chemicals and sugar. Years later I am grateful for this deprivation.
Thor – My taste in movies is very diverse. I love small, independent movies that no one has heard of and also gravitate towards thrillers and comic book blockbusters. I thought I had seen Thor with Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman so I was totally ready for Thor: The Dark World which just was released for rental. However, I realized I had not seen the first movie so I decided to follow the proper order to fully enjoy the story. Natalie Portman plays a very high level scientist (you know, because all scientists are as gorgeous as Natalie with perfect hair blow outs) who becomes involved/falls in love with Thor. The story is totally fantastical as one would expect but the dialogue is incredibly witty. I love this quote though “Magic is just science that we don’t understand yet – Arthur C. Clarke” because I do believe in magic and maybe be conceding to the fact that there is some science involved can change the minds of the doubters out there. Sometimes we all just need to embrace the mystery.
Business Time – Does anyone remember Flight of the Conchords? I only caught a few episodes here and there, but I stumbled upon this You Tube video this week and it seriously had me in stitches. There is something about a nerdy guitar player who sounds like Barry White who is singing about getting it on with his wife because there is nothing good on TV. Hilarious.
Next up – some studying for my personal trainer certification test. My goal is still to pass it by the end of next month!
